ensure that the process is completed.
Developmental Skills
Many of the services provided are done so by creating
a milieu that challenges each individual to adapt
to a social environment with expectations that
ensure safety, a sense of harmony and over-all
functionality. The developmental ability to reintegrate
into the larger society is increased by such social
skills as anger management and abstinence from
substance abuse. Residents are forbidden from bringing
alcohol or illegal substances on property and all
forms of verbal or physical assaultive behavior
are not tolerated. Instead, developing the ability
to bring up concerns with the intent of finding
a mutual resolution and agreement are encouraged.
The ability to work as a member of a team, both
small and large improve various activities requiring
teamwork.
Employment opportunities
Residents are offered career and work development programs provided
by the County. In Morro Bay, there are plenty of
jobs available that require limited job skills.
West Coast Housing has developed a number of relationships
with companies in the area that make an effort
to assist those seeking employment.
A simulation
of a work environment is created that requires
the voluntary vocational application of skills on part of those who
are residents. Food preparation, dishwashing, cleaning and sanitation
are all supervised by an experienced and certified cook. Minor repairs
and maintenance are supervised by skilled craftsmen. Grounds keeping
and janitorial duties are monitored closely.
Education
Clients are encouraged to attend academic and vocational training
such as at the local Junior College
Community Outreach
Food boxes are provided to the community as they call in and request
them; we get
a number of calls per week and so far have not had to turn any person or family
down
due to a lack of inventory.
Residents are encouraged to get involve in community
outreach, when there is a
special event either on the premises or out in
the community that requires the use
of volunteers.
